What is Invisible Technical?
Invisible Technical is a term that we use to describe our design philosophy. We can all appreciate the technical performance of high-end athletic or industrial wear. However, these often come at the cost of everyday practicality. We seek to develop and combine designs and advanced material science solutions that not only address our customers’ most important functional needs but can be ‘invisibly’ integrated. What does this mean? Functionality that doesn’t compromise the basic and thoughtful style of our apparel. This unique approach is what enables our clothing to be exceptionally versatile, to tackle whatever your day throws at you.

What makes KOY Gear clothes different?
When we first started KG, we set out with a dream to make amazing underwear. After a super successful Kickstarter campaign, we knew we had the potential for something more. Shortly after, we started planning and working to make more products that were just as special as our underwear, so here we are. As consumers of menswear, we aim to solve the ultimatum that customers face: a choice between style, price and functionality. Our clothing combines the best of all three. We also take pride in the way we manufacture our clothing and our impact in the communities we operate in and interact with. Here are the top 5 reasons to wear KOY Gear: Technology - We work with factories and materials engineers to create advanced technologies that address real pain points for many men. Our technology and apparel performance are scientifically tested in labs as well as rigorously tested in the real world. We aim to avoid using marketing buzzwords and labels to sell subpar performance. Accessibility - We provide quality technical products at reasonable prices. Fair pricing is a keystone in how we make our pricing decisions. We are a business that needs to ensure that we can keep the lights on and fuel growth. However, we are constantly aware of our customers and make every effort to make the pricing accessible to them. Additionally, we aim to educate the customer about the technology and what goes into making clothing so that they can avoid the marketing jargon and make educated decisions when buying their clothing. Design - Every element of our products has been thoughtfully designed through numerous versions of prototypes and beta testers, from the collar of our t-shirts (to prevent bacon neck) to the right amount of stretch so that the shirt will withstand your washing machine for years to come. Our team has been meticulous in the details so that the entire experience with KOY Gear products is amazing. Manufacturing sustainability - We only partner with factories with exceptional track records for producing quality clothing, exceeding environmental standards and treating their employees ethically and with integrity. As part of our 2022 initiative, we are committed to completing a full end to end audit of our processes to take meaningful steps towards making sustainability a part of the fundamental ‘fabric’ of our company. We will always be the first to acknowledge that there is always more that can be done to improve our processes. Clothing manufacturing inherently has effects on the environment. We will never be perfect, but we are committed to never settle for the status quo.

What is Pulse Labs?
It’s not only what we make, but also how we make it. Our customers and community are the ‘pulse’ behind everything we do. Our Pulse Labs program is designed to foster greater engagement with our customers so that we can craft products ‘in the lab,’ from start to finish, through their eyes. The first step is developing a clear understanding of our customers’ lifestyles, needs, and pain points. We then design and develop targeted solutions with our manufacturing partners. Lastly, we test these solutions in the lab and the real-world with beta testers from our community and will iterate continually until we are satisfied with our final product. Learn more about our Pulse Labs below.

How does the Pulse Labs work?
It started out with connecting with our past Kickstarter backers and gathering information from them. We then created a formal program in which new customers could register. Pulse members sign up on our website and answer a couple of questions to help us segment the member. They then fill out a profile survey that helps us understand the context in which the member might use their clothing and how they might use it. When we are creating a new product, we will send out surveys to members to understand specific pain points with the product category as a whole (ex. socks). We then compile all of the information and build our first product prototype. The product may go through numerous iterations before we send out beta test products to select Pulse members who in turn provide feedback for next iterations. The product will be refined and tested until it is ready for launch.

What’s the benefit of the Pulse program?
The Pulse program allows us to interact with our customers and build authentic relationships with them. In doing so, we get a better understanding of how to improve our clothing in a meaningful way. On the flip side, customers are able to have their voices and opinions heard. Some companies simply have loyalty programs that offer points in exchange for purchasing. However, we firmly believe that loyalty programs shouldn’t solely be about product rewards, but about genuine interactions and providing exceptional value that translates to customer loyalty. So as the program matures, members will have the opportunity for exclusive rewards and incentives; but more importantly, they will continue to have an opportunity to provide input and help shape future products that they’ll love and cherish.

How do you choose which materials to use?
We selected treatments that addressed the pain points and created our first prototypes. Then, our Pulse members tested the fabrics in various scenarios while providing their feedback along the way.
Here are a couple of things we need to consider when choosing materials: Polyesters, while being a versatile and stabilizing material, absorb odours that can never be washed out. Using too much will limit odour resistant properties. Elastane, like brand name Spandex or Lycra, makes for very comfortable and form-fitting clothing. However, using too much will make the garment too tight and will hug the curves of the body. Additionally, Elastane has very low tensile strength by itself, making it a very brittle material to use. Cotton, a commonly used material for many articles of clothing. It is known to be a very versatile material but underperforms compared to other materials. It’s a jack of all trades, master of none. Acrylic, commonly used as a synthetic alternative to wool. It is 2.5 times more durable wool and has long term durability when exposed to the elements. However, like wool, acrylic is not the softest or most comfortable material. Additionally, acrylic is not known for its absorbent properties. Modal, a great alternative to silk, is super soft and comfortable. It also has great colour retention properties. However, because of the nature of the fabric, it does not hold form well and will look saggy and droopy on the body. Viscose (Bamboo), an increasingly popular material in current clothing. It is absorbent and breathable. Despite sometimes being marketed as an environmentally friendly product, it is not particularly better (or worse) for the environment than any other material. Additionally, in using too much viscose, the clothing can appear to be saggy on the body since it does not have the tensile strength as seen in other textile materials. Nylon, a material known for being extremely strong, has seen numerous incremental improvements and iterations over the years. The current iteration has the same signature strength of its predecessors while holding the title as the most absorbent synthetic fiber. However, due to it’s similar nature to polyester, Nylon is doing not fare well against odour and bacteria. Material mix: often on paper, certain materials will appear to have the desired properties. However, when mixed with other materials, they don’t perform in the same way. Finding the right mix is just as important as choosing the right materials.
We iterated the fabric five times through working with our chemical partners to optimize the chemical treatments while tweaking the material composition of the shirts until we struck the perfect balance of stain resistance, odour resistance, comfort and breathability. The final product resulted in a stain resistant exterior that repels all kinds of aqueous stains (such as wine, juice, coffee, etc.) and a moisture wicking inner layer all the while providing the wearer with a breathable, comfortable and odour resistant garment. The combination of these features is previously unheard of but is made possible by our chemical partner in Germany, who treats all of our fabrics prior to final manufacturing.

How did KOY Gear come to be?
We are a company of creatives, entrepreneurs and dreamers who create products for those with an absolute commitment to pushing themselves to be better. As young people who are passionate about pushing our limits and embracing new experiences, we became dissatisfied with the clothing offered by existing companies. To us, the mass fashion industry and material innovation have largely evolved in tandem over time, but rarely have they converged. Soon, we began to find ourselves wearing athleisure clothing for comfort rather than finding clothes that fit our busy lifestyles with different activities being performed throughout the day. As a result, in 2017, KOY Gear grew from our desire to help to fill the market gap where clothes are versatile and adaptable to your lifestyle: a market segment that we have coined “Invisible Technical”. Our mission is to provide high-performance technical performance integrated seamlessly with thoughtful design and simplistic style.
With our first product, the “World’s Most Breathable, Odourless, Underwear,’’ our idea behind “Invisible Technical” was validated as our product was 320% funded on Kickstarter. Together with our customers, we succeeded in addressing major pain points for men (including overheating and odour). Additionally, thanks to our loyal supporters who inspire us to continue to create and innovate, our team and product line has grown. We are excited and honoured to have you join us on our journey!

Will you be making women’s cuts/clothing?
In the immediate future, we won’t be producing women’s cuts. We often get this question, and we take it as a compliment that demand exceeds our current offering. Stay tuned to our social media accounts and mailing lists for updates because your dreams may come true sooner than you think!
In the meantime, the socks are definitively unisex and can be worn by anyone! If you don’t mind a baggier t-shirt style, our shirts may fit the bill. We’re no women’s fashion experts, but don’t take it from us. Apparently, oversized t-shirts are a thing (http://fashiongum.com/womens-fashion/how-to-style-oversized-boyfriend-t-shirts/) and you could have the best performing oversized shirt among your friends!

What is BackerKit?
BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!
The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.
How does BackerKit work?
After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.
I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?
The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.
Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.
To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.
How do I update my shipping address?
BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.
When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?
That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.
I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?
As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
